The Politics of Art in the Middle East
DC folks, if you’re free on Friday June 2nd, I highly recommend you plan to attend this event on the Politics of Art in the Middle East from the Institute of Current World Affairs.
Graffiti covered the city walls. Cartoons were raised on placards. Poetry echoed from public squares. Creative provocations shaped the 2011 revolutions that electrified the Middle East and North Africa. Six years later, in the face of repression, visual artists and novelists offer the boldest critiques of resurgent autocracy.
ICWA Fellow Jonathan Guyer has assembled prominent artists, critics and writers to consider emerging trends in the visual and literary cultures of the contemporary Middle East and their relationship to politics. Comics, paintings, and fiction will set the stage for a new way of thinking about a region that is too often reduced to security considerations.
Ganzeer, who I have mentioned in the past, will be speaking as part of the second panel: GRAPHIC PROVOCATIONS from 11:15-12:15pm. It’s a free event, and will probably be eye opening, at the very least.
