Spacehawk - The Game (GBC)

Posted: July 6, 2026

My latest gameboy color game is out now, it’s a loving homage to Metroid II, and is available on cartridge and digital download . I’m immensely proud of it, and I hope you’ll give it a look.

After crash landing on an alien world, you make a discovery. A massive illegal mining operation, hidden deep beneath the surface. You must explore the interconnected caverns on this alien planet and find the materials needed to repair your ship.

Watch out, though, the mining operation is well guarded, the local wildlife is rambunctious, and there are secrets waiting to be discovered.

Spacehawk from Mountain Town Toys is a new game for the gameboy color based on an 85 year old comic book. You’ve never seen anything like it.

(You know, unless you’ve played Metroid II, in which case it’ll be really familiar)

It’s a metroid style 2D platformer. I don’t like the term metroidvania, but I guess you could use that here. It starts off very hard, dropping you on an alien world with no resources and a stun-gun with limited range. As you explore the cave depths, looking for the parts you need to repair your ship, you’ll encounter upgrades for your weaponry and movement, rescue a kidnapped girl, find a bunch of plants and animals, and eventually destory an illegal mining operation.

It took me about four hours to beat the game. I’m not very good at this kind of game, but I did design it and know where everything is so … your mileage may vary? The current speed run record, skipping all the optional upgrades and rushing directly to the end game is about 12 minutes. Can you beat that?

If you’re into this kind of thing, the crew at Mountain Town Toys sends out a regular newsletter with updates about their toys and games and upcoming cartoons. It’s called The Joyful Revolution and my understanding is that they’re planning to do some neat things with it. (I say “their” as if I am not involved with MTT. I’m not the only person involved in MTT, but I am a core contributor, as with this video game. I guess I should say “our”. Ah well.)

Anyway, thanks for reading. Play the game, let me know what you think. If you want to see it as a steam release let me know on mastodon. If I get 5 more people telling me to put it on steam I’ll start that process.
